Lake Park Society at Comox Lake

Inclusive Recreation Equipment

We believe the outdoors should be accessible to everyone and proudly provide inclusive recreation equipment at no cost. This equipment has been made possible with the generous support of Wachiay Friendship Society, Comox Valley Community Foundation and the Enabling Accessibility Fund.

Equipment is available for use between the months of May and September, 10am to 6pm.

Onit Ability Paddle Board

Everyone can enjoy the water with the Onit Ability Board, generously donated by Wachiay Friendship Centre. It can be paddled independently, seated in the wheelchair or standing. The outrigger system is highly effective and offers paddlers confidence out on the water. In addition, a paddling partner can assist for those with limited upper body mobility.

The board requires a minimum of 1 attendant (not provided), to asssist with board set-up during the months of May, June & September. Our staff can assist in the months of July and August.

The paddle board comes with a customized locking chair, two carbon fiber outriggers, an aluminum beach ramp and a custom size paddle.

Water Wheelchair

A floating beach wheelchair with floatable armrests and tires that easily transports you from the beach to the water.

The chairs requires a minimum of 1 attendant (not provided). The person using the chair must wear a personal flotation device (PFD) that we can provide, if needed.

The floating wheelchair has a weight capacity of 300 pounds or 136 kilograms.

Hand Adapation for Paddle

This back-of-the-hand grip is designed for use by those who have some hand function and can grip the paddle shaft on their own, but need a bit more support. The adaptation takes lifting pressure off of the fingers and places it on the arms. The height is adjustable and the end is open to allow for proper pressure without inhibiting release.

Can be used on either a canoe, SUP or kayak paddle. Currently available on canoe paddles for school and community canoe programs. Reach out if you have a request for this to be on other paddles.

Wrist Adaptation for Paddle

For those who are not able to grasp the paddle shaft, this is a two-part system. A wristband is worn on the wrist and an attachment plate is mounted to the paddle shaft. The wristband then slides into the paddle attachment, allowing full power, rotation and control without releasing. However, it releases easily by sliding the hand out, maximizing safety.

Can be used on either a canoe, SUP or kayak paddle. Currently available on canoe paddles for school and community canoe programs. Reach out if you have a request for this to be on other paddles.

Universal Canoe Seat

Regardless of the level of support needed, the seat provides as much or as little as the paddler needs.

Each support point of the seat is able to be independently tilted, adjusted or removed to create a custom fit. All supports are cushioned with closed-cell foam and covered in breathable mesh fabric for maximum skin protection.

This seat is available for all school and community canoe progams.

Transfer Bench

This easy-to-use system provides a flat, smooth transfer surface at wheelchair height. Our transfer bench is built to work with our big canoes and not with kayaks. It provides independence for the paddler, and safety for those assisting in the transfer.

The paddler slides to a transfer board, positioned directly above the canoe seat. Adjustable handles enable the paddler to remove pressure from the transfer board, which is then removed – freeing the paddler to lower down onto the canoe seat.

Beach Mats

An accessible beach mat is currently located at the boat launch.

More beach mats are scheduled to arrive for the main beach, later this year.
